I adore her and she needs to be my neighbour. Funny, fun, light-hearted and full of Jesus. Her books keep getting better. <3

When I picked up this book at a talk, I thought it would be girl power. What I got was girl power interlaced with God and Jesus. For someone who doesn’t believe that God is everywhere and we do things in the name of God, it was hard to wrap my head around the things that were said. I believe people change and evolve to better themselves and not because God is every changing. I rolled my eyes on a lot of the chapters. And I completely understand where she comes from and these are her beliefs. More power to her, but it’s not my ideal read. My other issue is that she wittered on and on and on, often times with repetitive information. The introduction alone only needed to be a page and a half. At one point, she wrote this is my last thought on this subject, and then kept going for four more pages. Consequently, I spent many chapters glazed over, losing focus or interest. I’m actually surprised I finished this book.
But I did. And mainly because the chapters did have great nuggets of truth. The How To chapters alone is what gave this book two stars instead of one star.

I usually reserve a chapter a day for the sorts of books that cause me to examine my faith. No could do with this one. Her lyrical, down-to-Earth anecdotes made me want to keep the internal conversation going and offered some much needed positivity in a world where it is hard to come by.

I didn’t find this profound or super thought provoking but I do think it opens the door to great discussion with other women. Great book club or even bible study option.

I love listening to audio books narrated by the author. Little slice in their life. I laughed a lot, just didn’t like the religious stuff but also wasn’t super in your face.

What can I say, I’m a sucker for sisterhood. This book is definitely most relatable if you are a middle aged woman with children or have had children, but there was enough humor and heart-felt rabbit trails to keep the whole thing interesting and fun to read even if you aren’t. Hard hitting theology book? No. Musings on facing life with Jesus and humor yes (thus the title really). It was a great pick me up in between schoolwork during finals, and I loved listen to Jen read her own book, especially when she would get choked up talking about how much she loved her parents or her kids or her girlfriends.

Targets a fairly specific audience (mostly Christian women who are mothers) and I also legitimately laughed out loud more than once while reading. I love Hatmaker's fierce southern personality, her frank humour and her deep love of people, all of which shine through in this book.

Of Mess and Moxie was written in a format similar to For the Love. A lot of people weren't fans of the jumping back and forth in FTL between serious vs. funny chapters, but I truly did. For some reason though, I felt like OMAM didn't flow as well as FTL did. The funny parts were still funny (my personal favorites were the How To chapters) but not as laugh-out-loud hilarious as FTL. The serious parts were mostly still really good, but nothing really gripped me nor will I reread it three (okay four) times in a year like I did with FTL. Three and a half stars.
