Fuck tiny Tim’s positive ahh

Despite knowing the story A Christmas Carol well through watching film adaptations and live productions, I realized this year that I'd never actually read the novel itself. I was inspired to pick it up from the library after watching "The Man Who Invented Christmas" (which was really great!). It's a quick read, and the copy I borrowed was very old-fashioned, tiny, with gilded edges and a padded green cover. The illustrations were so detailed and beautiful, and having seen in the film Dickens' dealings with the illustrator (John Leech) I had a greater appreciation for them. The story is as you'd expect, although in some parts a little more grim/graphic than in recent adaptations. At times the language was a little challenging as it was written in the early 1900's and people just had a different way of speaking/writing back then, but the story is clear and concise. It's inspiring to think about how a few simple characters have stood the test of time, and how the sentiments of this novel, written over 100 years ago, ring true.

While the artwork feels a little bland and slightly dated in some places, this is a fun rendition of the classic story and was a delight to read. I’m sure I’ve consumed A Christmas Carol in a dozen different ways over the years through various mediums, but it’s always fun to find a new retelling to put you in the Christmas Spirit.

A bit too quaint and goody at times, tells far more often than it shows, and features a few odd asides, A Christmas Carol by Charles Dickens is nevertheless a moving story about human redemption and the greed and generosity that exists within all of us. This classic is much deserving of its status in the pantheon of literature. Only to be improved if it actually had Kermit and the rest of the Muppets in the original novelette.
