Disappointing for a Printz nominee. I was so looking forward to this book since it is set in Scotland. But it is super hard to follow. I think it will be a hard sell for my students.

I think this book was just too slow for my liking, but the ending helped redeem it somewhat.
Also, Quilliam is such a funny name and I couldn’t take him seriously lmao

Somehow I both enjoyed this book and had to muddle my way through it. Every time I considered giving up, something happened that hooked me back in. And I really was curious as to why the boys were abandoned - end of the world, sea witch curse, wrath of God? All the theories were well explored. The story was incredible especially when you consider that it’s based on true events. What I struggled with the most was understanding the language. The book is based in Hirta (island in far north Scotland) in the early 1700s and the author did a good job making the dialogue authentic. On the flip side, this meant it took a lot of effort for me understand what was happening lol. I ended up skimming pages at times. Overall, I appreciated the story but don’t think I would recommend to anyone. I would be interested to read more about the true story!
I just loved this sea-splattered survival saga (wow my alliterating skills are just...).

It wasn't for me, it felt like random things were constantly being thrown in and I'm still not really sure what to think about it 😅
