This book was... a lot. Way more than I expected, and SO incredibly intricate as well.
I think my main walkaway from it is that it is a brilliantly crafted story about cycles of pain and abuse... which was not something I expected out of a horror fantasy mashup like this. Oh, and I adore the main female protagonist. Maddie's the GOAT.

Three words: way too long. And way too much going on. Y’all I tot this was a book abt a serial killer targeting young girls. It was NOT. It was soooo much more than that and heck, I still can’t properly describe what this book is about. It was quite convoluted and there were so many plot lines to follow and keep track of, I just couldn’t do it.
There was the “main” storyline with Oliver who cld visually see ppl’s pain. And how he was getting bullied at school.
Then there was also Nate’s storyline (Oliver’s father) who started a new job as a sheriff(?) and was trying to heal from his past traumas (of being abused by his own father)
Then there was Maddie (Oliver’s mum) who was some sort of artist, and her art sculptures wld come to life??
Then the serial killer guy who was supposed to die on the electric chair but didn’t?? And continued hunting girls??
And then Jake (some psycho kid who befriended Oliver) who’s basically Oliver in another world and wants to end all worlds by killing this world’s Oliver
And then Jed (Jake’s sidekick; manipulated lackey) who befriended Nate and lured him into a trap that gets him transported into another world??
It was hella messy and suddenly got some multiverse shit gg on. It’s like paranormal + sci-fi + thriller and idk man it was too much. Like I think if the book just stuck to one and went with it, it wld have been more readable (but less fun I guess). Anyway so Nate ends up being trapped in another world and tries his best to go back to his wife/Oliver. And they defeat Jake so their world is safe. That’s p much the main gist of it.
The book is quite graphic and violent, there are many scenes of explicit gore/violence (like eyes getting yanked out; heads getting bludgeoned)
I thought it was okay, just too long and complicated, it was hardly enjoyable. I skimmed a lot of it
