The first of Tana French's book's I've read where I couldn't fully get on board with the person(s) responsible for the crime. I can understand one person losing their mind, but to have multiple people lose their minds to such a degree was hard to swallow. Still loved listening to Scorcher's POV, and Tana's writing is as always top notch.

I really enjoy French’s complex characters and unexpected endings. I find myself reading these a touch slower than some other books, but I still thoroughly enjoy them.

There was so much in this book about living with and loving people with severe mental illness. It was gritty and very accurate in portraying the agony of watching someone you love go down a path you can’t protect them from. There are some really heavy themes in here that she does not shy away from. As a mom of 2 young kids and being married to a guy with the same name as the husband, I almost didn’t make it through parts of this book. I’m glad I stuck with it though as there were so many excellent observations on the human condition and moments of deep clarity throughout this book. It absolutely wrecked me by the end.

My continued effort to finish reading series that I started way back when and never finished...

This is book 4 out of 6, so I am in the home stretch on this Dublin Murder Squad family.

In this book, a young family of 4 is found dead in their home. It was their first home in a new housing development, a development that the builders later abandoned when sales were poor and they ran out of money.

What to listen to while reading (or during reading breaks)
Seven Day Mile by The Frames
Like Water by Magic Island
You Have Killed Me by Morrissey
Golden Antlers by Glass Animals
There Must be More than Blood by Car Seat Headrest
Rising Water by Andrew Bird
Your Day Will Come by Son Luxe

A. I wanted there to be an environmental factor for the Spains being psychotic (and maybe even Scorcher’s sister, given the time they spent there at a young age), something about building the house with lead pipes or something underground or whatever.
B. Were the lined up squirrel skeletons ever explained, or were they a hallucination? I wanted that to be the creepy neighbor kid.
