Blurton’s memoir was just a completely mesmerising read on all fronts - I have so much respect for the tenacity, love, humility and kindness Blurton has in bucket loads, and the resilience she has developed and channeled towards those growing up with similar challenges thrust on them. What most shines in the writing is the reclamation of agency in her narrative - after racism, homophobia, intergenerational trauma, and the media have dictated and constructed narratives *about* Blurton, this is such an empowered and energised ownership of that story and writing the record straight. I love that memoir as a genre can afford people this, and Blurton’s text is such a joyous celebration of this being done to perfection. It is a difficult read subject matter wise, Blurton has had an incredibly difficult hand dealt to her in life and takes the reader through some incredibly vulnerable moments as well as celebrating the highs and successes that marked her career and shot to stardom. If you’re a memoir fan, I highly recommend this!
