While I have heard the brunt of these stories from reading other novels and collections of his, the audiobook read by Gaiman was worth the listen.

Being a huge Gaiman fangirl, this was a must-buy, obviously.

Whew, this was a chonky boi, but as I had previously read most (if not all) of the stories in here it took less time than expected! A good mix of pieces of varying ages - definitely made me want to reread Neverwhere and The ocean at the end of the lane.

Also, We can get them for you wholesale is still one of my all-time fave short stories.

Hands down, the best short story collection I have ever read. There's not a single story that I would not enjoy. If I were to name my favorites, I'd have to name at least 80% of the book, which would be a really long review, so let me note a few honorary mentions.

A story that stuck with me the most was certainly Troll Bridge. I think it's because the end caught me so surprised, and the realization of what was really happening in front of my own eyes cut so deep.

The story Murder Mysteries contains my favorite ever re-telling of the world creation. I don't think I can ever see it differently anymore than angel-researchers having a little Earth model, testing concepts like love or green. Besides that, the main character (which I read as a re-telling of how Lucifer became the fallen angel) stirs all sorts of emotions, but mostly a lot of compassion for those good people who were not in line with those in power.

I was very impressed by The Wedding Present because the idea of alternate realities was always a fascinating one for me - and here it had a very cool twist, too.

I have a soft spot for the character of Shadow, so both The Monarch of Glen and Black Dog hit home. Similarly with Marquis de Carabas in How the Marquis Got His Coat Back.

I enjoyed How to Talk To Girls at Parties, partially because I love when Gaiman writes characters that see less than what the reader can infer.

Stories like The Thing about Cassandra (but also the already mentioned Troll Bridge and many others) make my head spin by revealing something at the end that makes me replay the whole story with a new understanding, knowing the author was playing with my perception the whole time.

If you're gonna read Click-Clack the Rattlebag, I highly recommend finding a spoken-word version on Youtube, performed by Gaiman himself. It's a treat. (And one more of those where the end leaves you re-evaluating the whole story.)

A special mention goes to my all-time favorite story October Tale in The Calendar of Tales. It makes me feel so warm and sweet.

The only reason why it took me 3 months to read this over-700-pages long book was that I would only ever read one story at a time, wanting to let the atmosphere linger over me for a little bit longer.

After feeling as though I was well-acquainted with Gaiman’s writing, this certainly proved me wrong.

“Somewhere in the night. Someone was writing.”

This is such a special collection of short stories – something of which I am not all that familiar with, but has certainly encouraged me to read more of.

There was so much mischief, mayhem, and magic from cover to cover. I honestly don’t know what else to say about this read!

A few of my favourite stories were:
- Babycakes
- The Wedding Present
- Changes
- Click Click the Rattlebag
- Excerpt from Stardust
- Don’t Ask Jack

“He lay in a bed that was too small for him, and imagined time as something that pooled and puddled, wondered if there were places where time hung heavy, places where it was heaped and held—cities, he thought, must be filled with time: all the places where people congregated, where they came and brought time with them.”
