I can see why they compare this book to Lolita (of course, everything by Nabokov, practically, is eventually compared to Lolita), but the story is really rather different. I think the bext parts are (1) the multiple unrealities in the story (the date being the 32nd of the month, for example) and (2) the descriptions of everything in that wonderful Nabokovian way .

Interesting to read after just having read "Lolita," although clearly a distinct work. Just as interesting was son Dmitri Nobokov's commentary following the text.

What I love about this book is its size, it gives a quick idea of how beautifully written Lolita is, Nabakov is a master with words and weaving skilful sentences out of complex train of thoughts. It is pretty evident why he chooses such dicey themes once you’re immersed in the beauty of the language.
I highly recommend this short read to anyone who want to read Lolita but haven’t yet for some reason. This is a perfect window into that famous novel.

Part horror story, part mystery thriller, "The Enchanter" is a more perverse and morbid predecessor to "Lolita." Though it's clear that "Lolita" was born from this earlier short work, there are enough distinctions between the two pieces for them each to carry their own momentum. Worth a read by anyone who adores "Lolita" and could stomach a more explicit version.

Připomněla jsem si, proč mě tenkrát Nabokov se svou Lo-li-tou tolik uchvátil. Jeho psaní je místy čistá poezie, která vás naprosto ochromí. Ačkoliv Nabokov stojí mimo morální úvahy, čtenáři může přinést čtení Čaroděje velmi rozporuplné pocity – ani já se nedokázala úplně oprostit od etického hlediska, ale zároveň jsem neodolala podlehnout tomu vzrušení, vycházejícího jednak z představ hlavního hrdiny (tak dechberoucně krásných jako znepokojivých), jednak z autorova precizního popisu (a působivého použití kontrastů).
Je „úchvatně krásný popis amorálnosti sám špatností”? – za mě rozhodně ne. Tahle „Lolita na sto stranách” – jak je často nazývána – mě naprosto pohltila a okouzlila.
„Tak tedy budou žít – smát se, číst knihy, podivovat se světluškám, hovořit o kvetoucí temnici světa, a on jí bude vyprávět a ona bude poslouchat, jeho maličká Kordelie, a nedaleké moře bude dýchat pod lunou...
