Honestly, I don’t remember how this one got on my to-read list. It’s a 1970s philosophical, dystopian sci-fi novel, and none of those things are what I usually read. I appreciated the message in it (a bit socialist, anti-capitalist, but also sex positive and anti-religious?), but I would have a hard time summarizing the plot to anyone who asked. It’s a book with a lot of awards, and the author (Ursula Le Guin) is highly revered in the scifi community. I’m glad I read it, but do not feel the need to explore other books in this realm.

Thought provoking and inspiring. Shows what an anarchist future could look like and what some of the possible issues that could arise.

i feel like if i were annotating this book i would’ve highlighted every other line, ursula leguin knows how to write BANGERS
i’m super glad i finally read this classic. i loooved the premise & how different ideologies were explored through the different planets & societies. i thought it was so smart to show the capitalist society through the eyes of someone raised on the nonviolent non hierarchical anarchist moon, really highlighting the flaws & inequities perpetuated
the characters’ perspectives & relationships with each other was a highlight for me as well. i found a lot of value in listening to their conversations & just came away with a lot to philosophically chew on!!
however i did struggle with shevek’s narration at times because he was just so dang naive. one specific example that drove me crazy was him believing people CHOSE to go to the asylum?? i understand that his upbringing & belief system allowed this level of willful ignorance but it did get pretty frustrating
unfortunately i also just struggled with how sci-fi this book was, which is obviously a personal issue lol i don’t think doing it on audio helped either as i had a pretty hard time keeping up with characters’ & countries’ names. the dual timelines were also tough for me to follow, which doesn’t usually happen to me!
overall i think this book is a fascinating intellectual journey exploring human nature & power systems, even if the execution was not my usual cup of tea!
