Aidan is the second son of a Duke who owes a life debt to a guy who dies in the Napoleonic wars. Dying guy requested that Aidan take care of his sister, which she doesn't seem to need until he realizes her father was a vindictive will-writer and she'll be out on the street unless she gets married ASAP. Eve is a coal heiress who has been kicking the marriage can down the road while accumulating a house full of controversial staff and unofficially adopted children who would have a tough time finding a place elsewhere (she was sort of counting on her family dying at less inconvenient times). Aidan decides to save her ass by marrying her and then permanently dipping, but he keeps finding reasons to stick around. They have a pretty nice time together and both are like "Well that was nice, too bad my spouse will be gone forever after this and I'll never ever see them and the heat death of the universe will occur before we hang out again for absolute sure. Sigh."

This is pretty old school, but not in a toxic way. It's very grounded and serious, and the protagonists are reasonable and practical people, which is nice except that I was ready for them to just own up to liking each other much earlier. I found that the first half worked better for me than the second.

I listened to the audiobook, and the narrator is well suited for this tone of story, so I would recommend it.
