Meh. I struggled to connect with Aidan and Eve, and their relationship felt very mechanical to me - as did the sex scenes. I’m not sure if it’s just this writer or because this is a 20 year old book, but I didn’t get the real connection with his emotions that I was looking for. I won’t be reading any more in this series.

I really enjoyed this romance; although Eve comes across as a bit of a softhearted do-gooder initially (and she absolutely is), we nonetheless get to see her layers peeled back over the course of the book and she becomes a more interesting and complex character. The humour mined from the essential stubbornness of both Eve and Aidan about their circumstances gives their romance more heart than I expected. And Aidan's layers were just as expertly peeled back by Mary Balogh as Eve's; his slow slide toward realizing that he does not want to live his life without Eve was really heartwarming. This was a really well executed marriage of convenience romance, and one that I will definitely be re-reading again in future!
