Wasn't too bad. It's been a while since I've read a Balogh book, but I was quickly reminded of her love of using "Yes" as a dialogue response. Nothing else, just a "Yes". Mildly infuriating and lame.

The lady has a spine, the gent is all mushy inside that harsh facade. Just how I like it ;-)

So I might have been bawling near the end. This was just such a touching and sweet story. And what’s great about Balogh’s writing is that it feels like it could very easily be from the era about which she’s writing. The only drawback is that this book is a bit slow. Other than that, it's wonderful.

Slightly Married gives a twist to the marriage of convenience trope. What Aidan does out of duty and honor, thinking it would never have to be known, becomes more and more complicated for everyone involved. Unforeseen consequences of the quick marriage cause Aidan and Eve to rethink all their plan for the present and perhaps the future.
The characters were well written and didn't follow the usual. Aidan was imposing and regal, but not handsome. His demeanor was somewhat grim and he never smiles. Aidan bother Wulfric, Duke of Bewcastle, is rigid and dictatorial. Eve is strong and likeable, but unsophisticated and sometimes rash.
Balogh spends a lot of time developing the characters and is a master at showing and not telling. I did think the lack of open communication went on just a little too long, but it didn't detract much from my enjoyment of the book, the writing, and the characters.

Mais uma autora de romance de época. E, mais uma autora que gostei.
Este conta a história de Eve uma rapariga que mora no campo na casa deixado pelo seu pai, senhor que não pertencia à aristocracia mas que era abastado. Quando recebe em casa o Coronel Aidan que lhe vem dar a notícia da morte do irmão, porque é só o seu dever. Mas será que tudo o que o Aidan faz depois é só porque é só o seu dever?
Uma das "tropes" que eu gosto muito em romances é casamentos por convêniencia. Acho que gosto de eles não gostarem um do outro ao início, mas de pois com a convivência com tudo o que passam juntos começarem a nutrir sentimentos um pelo outro. E este é feito de uma forma muito maravilhosa. Conseguimos gostar de ambas as personagens principais e de perceber as reticências que cada um tem pelo outro.
O carinho incontestável de Eve por qualquer pessoa que é ostracizada pela sociedade. E o sentido de dever de Aidan faz com que sejam diferentes, mas tão iguais. A família de Aidan é super divertida e caótica. A típica família inglesa que tem estatuto. Curiosa para descobrir como é que a autora vai quebrar estes corações gelados.
Tem uma escrita acessível, mas não é das histórias que mais fluí dentro dos romances de época que já li, mas se for como Lisa Kleypas vai-me fazer mudar de ideias com os restantes livros.
Estou cada vez mais a adorar descobrir novas autoras de romances de época e a adorar este género literário. Um livro, uma saga dentro desse género que recomendo!
