Very cute story. Characters and the way it‘s written do feel historic. The way the story was set up in the beginning felt very flat to me. Story is predictable, but very cute.

The starchiest Colonel, Lord Aidan Bedwyn, agrees to his comrade-in-arm's dying wish to take care of his sister. When Aidan shows up to tell Eve Morris that her brother is dead, he also learns of a complicated inheritance problem: if Eve doesn't marry in the next 4 days, she'll lose her house to an awful cousin and the ability to care for her servants and adopted children. Aidan does what any good historical romance hero does: agree to marry her and acquire a special license. The best part is that after the marriage she'll have the protection of his name and they don't even have to see each other. But what if they want to?

I love a starchy hero, and Aidan Bedwyn is a starchy king. He has a good heart, he just doesn't know how to share that love with someone like kindhearted Eve. Eve is a Welsh country girl through and through, and loves the ability to shock society when she's introduced.

I saw someone review this as the "most marriage of convenience marriage of convenience trope" and that's truly right. It's so inconveniently convenient that it takes the entire book to really resolve. This was my first Balogh and I really enjoyed it. It feels like a solid series setup and I look forward to more of the Bedwyns.

I liked this marriage of convenience because it was truly two strangers getting married and really taking their time falling in love, almost reluctantly. I loved meeting all of the Bedwyn family and am very interested in the rest of the cast. I liked that Aidan was very starchy and took a looooong time to come to terms with his feelings and take a risk with Eve, and I loved how Eve loved "her" kids. Overall a lovely historical marriage of convenience!

It is a truth universally acknowledged that I am a sucker for a tall, brooding hero (IN UNIFORM!!!) who is duty-bound to a fault and a plucky, bleeding-heart heroine who absolutely refuses to be cowed by her “betters.” This book absolutely delivered and, bonus, had some non-annoying children who were actually endearing (I’m generally very anti-kids in romance, just because they’re seldom written well, but young Davy and Becky were delightful.) Admittedly, this book could have been wrapped up about a hundred pages sooner, but then we wouldn’t have had all those cute scenes of fishing and farming and lazing about in the beautiful English countryside, and they were just as wonderful as the romance itself.
emotional funny

This book has me giggling and kicking my feet. These adorable fools, I love them.

I love the lies they tell themselves. I’m not sure if this is a Mary Balogh thing or if it’s just these characters, I hope it’s just these characters. The way it’s written, I find it so charming.

This really made me tear up at the end. The payoff from the angst was so sweet and heartwarming, oh man that got me. I love these silly gooses.

I’m starting to get a grasp on the different writing-eras of historical romance. This felt very early 2000s, or at least I can tell the marked difference between 2010s novels and 2020s.

Don’t know that I’ll continue reading the rest of the series, this one just took me too long to get through.

I haven't read this since my freshman year of college but I am not realizing that this was just the first book that really held all my catnip and I didn't know it yet! (Ahhhh my sweet summer child...)

I love Eve so much from page one. She is my favorite kind of heroine - soft, and warm, and kind but with a backbone of steel. She is wildly strong in so many ways! And she lives my dream life - just hanging out in the country adopting all the stray humans and animals. But I can't sleep on this hero - Aidan is so emotionally constipated and such a grump but also just such a sweetie! He literally only tries to do what is right and tries to support Eve in his own way. I am so glad I reread this!
