I’m not much a fan of David Hinton’s translation of Tao Te Ching. He seems to take something already mystifying and make it even more so (which might be a Taoist accomplishment

First read of a book that needs to be read many times in a life. I think there's something to be said in the difference between my expectations for a mind-opening experience, and the banal simplicity of the actual text. Recognizing that gap (and its source) is probably the first step on the path of unlearning, of returning to the source; then again, what do I know?

Decent and thoughtful read. Tao Te Ching is filled with singular and poetic reflections on the cosmology and philosophy of the Way and Integrity.

Not all that impactful to me but I’ve seen this referred to as an “every person” book and I can kind of agree. In this selection of spiritual reflection, there’s at least one singular passage or phrase that could directly affect or resonate with any reader.

In that regard, I’m keeping this one tidy on my shelf and I plan to revisit it and study it more soon.

“You may govern the nation through principle
and lead armies to victory through craft,
but you win all beneath heaven through indifference.”
