This Narnia entry reads more like a book of fables with a thread of continuity, and I’m not mad about it. It’s my favorite entry in the series yet. Fun characters, whimsical experiences and adventures… I think this must be the singular book that people think of when they think of the variety of magical circumstances associated with Narnia (see also: Fillory).

The preachiness is light, with Aslan appearing for the most part only briefly, to nudge characters away from making poor decisions. At the end, though, the tie-in to Christianity is more direct and literal than anything, though it is brief.

I continue making my way through this series with the audiobooks. THE VOYAGE OF THE DAWN TREADER introduces us to Eustace Scrubb, a whiny, petulant boy who will undergo multiple transformations after finding himself pulled into Narnia with Lucy and Edmund.

Another solid installment in the series.

I’m having such a hard time with these books now, after loving them all my life. I’m trying to enjoy the fantasy/fairy tale aspect of them, but my utter distain for religion is getting in the way. This one is still my favorite, still charming and fun.
