The book itself is not what makes this book interesting. What makes this book interesting is the fact that Dr. Seuss made a picture book for adults starring seven nude women taking care of horses until they come up with puns (Such as "Horseshoes are Lucky" or "You can lead a horse to water..."). Seuss famously complained his original print run for Seven Lady Godivas did poorly because adults are impossible to please, that they lack imagination, that they are "obsolete children." Honestly though? The humor is just lame and the illustrations are not all that creative or wacky especially for a Dr. Seuss work. Still an interesting piece worth checking out. Imagine watching an HBO drama produced by Mr. Rogers and you'll have an idea of what reading this book is like.

All the hubub about Dr Seuss's books going out of print this week led me to look into one of his books that went out of print a long time ago. It is a cute picture book, with a simple story of a bunch of naked ladies. I'm not sure why Dr Seuss decided to write a book for adults, unless he was looking for an excuse to draw naked ladies, and try out some risque humor. I'm guessing even by 1939 standards this book was fairly tame--I've seen '40s pin-ups with more sex and verve--but it is certainly a unique offering. I was fortunate enough to get this book from my local library, and suggest checking there first if you want to read it yourself.

A lovely book - quite goofy, quite strange, not quite for adults or children.

It lacks Seuss's usual fun writing (because it's meant for adults, which I guess means less fun). It's basically a very strange set up to being able to tell you a bunch of common sayings that all happen to involve horses, which would make it a great comedy book if the punch lines were funny. Lastly, it never explains why the lady Godiva's are all naked (which seems like a pivotal part of the Godiva story and a rather stark omission given social norms.)
