I wanted to start this year strong by getting into a really good mystery and I had some expectations, knowing Agatha Christie's other works. My expectations were not met by any means, as this book was bland and slow-paced. Just an average read.

Rating: 3/5

A good strong mystery (as always, with Christie), an interesting cast of characters, and a slightly unusual setting for the author.

This novel is set in a beautiful scenery. It talks a lot about psychology which is really interesting! The only tiny little bit that I did not like as much was that it is quite repetitive at times.
But still: I highly recommend this book

mossybeds's review against another edition

DID NOT FINISH

DNF about a third of the way through; the relentless fatphobia was too much for me! We're told over and over again that Mrs Boynton, the villain, is fat, but also that her body is disgusting and a part of her villainy. Other characters armchair diagnose her with a range of mental illnesses (the mundanity of human cruelty not being exciting enough, I guess) and talk about how grotesque she is constantly. Another heartbreaking example of a disabled person being portrayed as powerfully evil, to contrast with the fact that it's usually the opposite in real life where disabled people are vulnerable to familial abuse.

All to say, I found it distracting / upsetting to the point where I DNF.
