The story did not go where or how o thought it would but I found it engaging and the ending mildly satisfying.

Historical fantasy fiction written beautifully. Refreshingly written in third person with an omnipotent narrator, sparing us the ‘I this, I that’ of many Romantasy novels.
The story is slowwww. Hard to focus and get into at the start. It picks up. Set during the Spanish Inquisition, it’s very  political heavy and sometimes hard to follow. But The budding romance is sweet. Story picks up halfway through and then goes very fast at the end. Perhaps wrapped up too quickly but I still enjoyed the story nonetheless.

this started a lot slower than I wanted it to. imo, pacing was a little off across the book, but once i got into it, the plot started getting me really into it. i like luzia just fine, but i wish the romance. hadne't been added in --  it felt shoehorned into everything to fit into the romantasy genre. leigh bardugo has written much better romance before. (how old is santangel?? i didn't love the massive age difference.

the setting being within the spanish Inquisition was complementary to the magic system. the magic system wasw interesting because of how it focused on the importance of language and how language and culture of minority populations is demonized by the majority for being other. knowing how the inquisition ended and how it was carried out added to the overall tension of the book. [SPOILER] i do wish Santangel and Luzia had died -- their final sacrifice and escape were really rushed and pretty middling.

I almost gave up on this one because there was so much cruelty and unfairness at the start. I'm glad I kept going, because it kept going in directions I didn't expect and got awesome!

I wish Leigh Bardugo would put all her writing energy into writing for adults. Her adult books are so much better than the YA.
