I only wish this book existed when I was 10-years-old, as elementary age me would have devoured and loved it.
can’t believe my first book of the year is in february and this book
I was surprised by how much I liked this book, because I never really got into the whole Gary Paulsen craze. Part of the reason that I liked it was because of the historical fiction aspect of it. Woods Runner takes place during the American Revolution, but wasn't about any of the traditional famous people that are so often focused on. It was just the story of a normal family doing what they had to do to get by during this time.
Could not get into this one. I listened to the audio and wasn't a huge fan of the reader, so maybe that was the problem? I felt like the only parts I was able to pay attention to were the historical notes at the end of chapters.
Samuel loves the woods. He is more comfortable in the woods than he is in his small community. He spends the time hunting, providing food. But when he returns home from one of his hunting trips, he finds a scene of devastation and death. People who he knew and loved are gone. But where are his parents? They are nowhere to be found.
As he looks for his parents and tracks the party that was responsible for their disappearance. As he comes across more of the devastation as he moves closer to the people who have kidnapped his parents, he comes across a family who offers him food. Shortly after he leaves, that same family is hit by Hessian soldiers, with only the daughter escaping into the woods. Samuel goes after her, to find and help her get somewhere safer. As he and Annie work their way toward where his parents have been taken, they find a group of people willing to help him find his parents.
See the American Revolution as told through the eyes of Samuel, and his quest to not only find his parents but save a young girl who has lost her entire family.

Teacher notes:
Good read for reluctant readers, companion text for history, good read for voice, can get slow in parts

Quick historical fiction read. Good little 'real excepts' every chapter discuss things like prisoner of war, food, etc, during Revolutionary Time.
A unique perspective on how the Revolutionary War affected frontier families. The blurbs accompanying each chapter add extra historical references. Quick read yet exciting
It was engaging and entertaining. As an adult, I wanted more depth. If I had read this as a pre-teen or young teen, I would have eaten it up.
