Gary Paulsen sure knows how to tell a survival story with all the brutal details.
What a great survival story set during the Revolutionary War! I really liked how there were tidbits of information about the time period or the war itself in between the story.

I recently did a re-read of the "Hatchet" series, as my son was doing a re-read himself. He then expressed an interest in this book (we had the hardcopy in our home library). Originally I hadn't planned on reading this, but it is short and I figured there might be some discussion with my son. My one wish was that I hadn't read it back to back with the Hatchet series, as while this was not Brian (the MC of that collection), there were some similarities. The boys are around the same age, both very good at all the "woodsy" things. Even though Hatchet is contemporary and this was set back in 1776, it didn't feel that different (as Brian's life was very primitive for most of the books). There was also a situation that felt very similar between this and the final Hatchet book SPOILER where our boy comes upon the house of a family he knows which has been attacked. In one book it's by a bear, in the other it's by bad guys, but in both, the parents are killed and our MC comes across the grizzly scene, and saves a young surviving daughter ...
The author did an interesting thing here ... I think I liked it, I'm not sure. What might otherwise be extensive author's notes, or footnotes, were included at the end of each chapter, a little historical/factual set of information. Just a small topic (communication, frontier life, weapons) that gave general info having to do with the time (often relating to the story, but separate).

Good. It was violent (the brutality of war was a major theme) and the ending was implausible, but suited to the intended audience. I listened to the audiobook and it helped my commute pass quickly.

A fair bit of interesting history in a small, but emotional, story.
