The training begins! This whole series is going super fast. There is so much packed into one volume and I can't get enough. I felt so sorry for Gohan. But I really liked how Piccolo seemed to get close to him without admitting it. I really want to see Goku come and just destroy all of them. Things are going to get real very soon.
This volume is a little bit less spicy than the first one. There's still a lot of sexual humor though. It's interesting to go back and watch Dragon Ball transform from a comedy series to an action one.
Honestly, I think this series is really funny. The problematic elements are still there. Master Roshi is still a pervert. Oolong still doesn't respect consent. The overall tone is still very childish though, and the characters seem to understand sex in the same way kids do. They don't actually want to have sex, they just want to look at and touch boobs and underwear. I also think that a large part of the joke is that the characters are acting inappropriately. Honestly, I feel like as long as you've had some meaningful conversations about consent with your kids this is pretty harmless.
I am hoping this is the last time we see teen Bulma getting sexualized. That's easily the part I am most uncomfortable with. One of the things that really strikes me about this is just how difficult it is to depict teen sexuality. I still think it's important to do that for the sake of teenagers, but this has some pretty significant missteps.

Dragon Ball is very popular, and I can understand why. I also can't help but hate it for how it treats its female characters. I really enjoy them, I'm just very uncomfortable with how frequently men are disgusting and how I as the reader an expected to think it's funny.
