2 STARS for the last volume
like how the author explained in the author's note, the ending was rushed. and it shows. it left me somewhat unsatisifed where the story went. it's not technically a bad ending, but i expected something more, especially with the two previous action-packed volumes.
2.5 STARS for the complete Sagala volumes
overall i did appreciate and enjoy these graphic novels and find it refreshing to read something that's based off of my country's culture. as a Filipino, i'm always craving for some representation since most of literature nowadays are dominated by foreign influences. i do hope to read more from this author if they ever decided to continue this story or release a different one. if you're looking for a simple fantasy story with good sibling relationships, this is a good pick for you.

It just lacks more essential information/ background on some major plot points of the story. Still great!

“I'm not lace and pearls. I'm gunpowder and steel.”
Sagala by Tori Tadiar is a self published historical fantasy graphic novel with a setting that is heavily influenced by the Spanish reign in the Philippines. It features a cast of four described as a gunslinging girl, a protective older brother, a mythical fae-like ambassador, and a conniving courtesan.
This graphic novel is rich in world building and Philippine culture with a setting that reminds me so much of Intramuros. I loved the snippets of Filipino language and all the Maria Clara and Barong outfits drawn onto these characters.
The story reminds me a little of a badass Filipino version of Princess Diaries and Cinderella accompanied by lush world building, political shenanegans, and betrayals that happen left and right.
This graphic novel is an amazing labor of love drawn through years and years of work. You can find the preview (chapter 1-3 of 4) on the PENLAB app and chapter 4 for purchase on the author’s website haitori.com as well as dozens of full color concept art, It’s truly lovely and such a brilliant graphic novel.

A masterpiece that had me sobbing at night — all because of the brother-sister softness and unapologetic Filipino influences. This graphic novella owns my whole heart. Full review to follow.

I really love the brother-and-sister bond of Constantino and Riel. Amazing artwork, albeit I find the execution of the story slightly lacking. Still, it's a fun and fast read. Will definitely look forward to other stories from the same universe as Sagala is in.

There were some plot holes but nevertheless, I enjoyed reading this. The cover is just so frickinnnn beautiful and throughout the 4 comics, I did notice the change in style haha. Good job Tori!!
