I wanted so badly to like this book. The plot, a Judaism-centered romance, it all sounded so great. And I adored the last Rosie Danan book I'd read.

Naomi is a former sex worker now start-up business woman who wants to teach.

Ethan is a rabbi who wants to get young people into his shul.

Through their seminar series, they become closer and start using the series as a roadmap for a potential relationship.

Sounds great, right?

The pacing. Oh my word, the pacing. The stakes aren't even high, so why did we end up with 2 chapters 3/4 of the way through the book solely devoted to a synagogue softball game for a plot point that went nowhere? By the end of the book, I was skimming entire chapters because nothing was happening.

There were multiple Naomi scenes that gave me so much second-hand embarrassment that I almost DNF'd. In hind sight, maybe I should have.

I don't know if it was a me issue or if the author couldn't keep backgrounds straight, but I swear the amount of time both Naomi and Ethan had spent immersed in Judaism while young changed throughout the book. One chapter, they'd say they were completely secular, and in other they mentioned going to weekly services.

All in all, I'm glad I checked this one out of the library instead of spending money on it.
