A well researched account of an important but largely overlooked bit of US history.

I listened to the Ultra podcast, and wondered how much more this book would cover. Oh my lord, it covers so much more. It fleshes out everything that is talked about in the podcast and gives it so much more depth. There were lots of places where I'm sure the look on my face was one of horror at just what had taken place and how people behaved.

I recommend this book if you enjoyed Ultra, if you like learning about history, or if you're just a fan of Rachel Maddow. She narrates the audiobook and is wonderful.

A fascinating deep dive into the pre WW2 roots of US anti-semitism and fascism. Reads like a spy novel. Well sourced, narrated by Maddow herself, moving, and frightening.
