FMC (Ella): 3.5 (did her reasoning for staying with the Cavendishes make sense? No. Was she the stereotypical born yesterday girl? Kinda. She was still likable)
MMC (Nick): 4.5 (the mans was down bad from their first interaction and he never looked back - wish he would have destroyed the evil Geoffrey though)
đ: 4 (loved how he loved her. Also loved how he secretly married her instead of making her his mistress - it was like that DW meme âthat social convention canât stop me because she canât read đ)
Plot: 3.5 (more entertaining than some of Richardsâ plots but still could have amped up the action and drama)

This was my favorite by far. I loved how much Nick loved Ella and how well they fit together. I just felt giddy the entire way through.

Maybe we don't marry our servants without telling them? That's a for life con, my dude.

This one is hard to review. Itâs well-written but, on consent... so problematic. The hero tries to teach the heroine that she can say no, early on in their relationship. But the power dynamic really doesnât allow her that right. And then, for the rest of the book, he doesnât really allow her to say what she wants. He even tricks her into marrying him because she canât read the contract. For a book that was obviously trying to give the heroine agency, it does the exact opposite. At no time, do I feel convinced that she has true agency.
I do like the relationship between her and one of her not-so-evil âstepsistersâ. This is an obvious Cinderella retelling. And it has a unique way. It could have been great, but it just fails.

While I didn't like this story as much as the others in Ms. Richards's back catalog, it's still a good book. It's a Cinderella retelling and predictable as such, but the characters are lovely. Ella who continues to clean even when her life changes, and Nick who doesn't know what to do with himself except that he's falling in love with Ella. I loved that he made the right choice with her, even when it all comes unglued later in the book. Onward to the next book.
