De insteek van het verhaal, waarbij alles vanuit het gezichtspunt van de orcs wordt verteld, leek mij vernieuwend en veelbelovend. Ik bleef qua uitwerking echter wat op mijn honger zitten. De Orcs werden gewoon té menselijk voorgesteld. Neem de letterlijke verwijzingen dat je met Orcs te maken hebt weg uit de tekst en je houdt eigenlijk een heel klassiek verhaal over.
Het verloop van het verhaal zelf was bovendien ook niet zo erg boeiend: heel veel gevecht scenes. Zoveel dat het verhaal zelf erin verdrinkt.
Pluspunt is wel dat de auteur echt wel weet hoe hij een goede gevecht scene moet schrijven. Deze zijn flitsend, beeldend en vol actie.
Voor de rest is het een verhaal van een groep zeer menselijke orcs die alles op alles zetten om een aantal mysterieuze objecten te pakken te krijgen waarvan niemand lijkt te weten wat ze precies zijn of doen. Ze reizen van hot naar her en slachten zo wat iedereen die op hun pad komt af.
Ik hoop dat het vervolg van het verhaal wat meer duidelijkheid zal brengen en een nieuwe impuls aan het verhaal zal geven

Pour que personne ne perde de temps, je vais le dire tout de suite : ça fait longtemps que je n'avais pas lu un livre aussi m...édiocre, voire en fait, minable.
La promesse est sympathique : nous montrer, pour une fois, l'envers de la fantasy en prenant des orcs comme héros. Moi, en voyant ça, je m'attendais à de la méchanceté, de la bêtise crasse, voire de la brutalité gratuite.
Hélas, à tous mes espoirs, l'auteur répond rapidement en faisant épargner par ses héros verdâtres un bébé à la chair délicatement rosée. Est-ce que vous vous rendez compte de la médiocrité du truc ? Quelque chose qui est possible dans la SF la plus élevée (je pense évidement à l'anthropophagie qu'on trouve typiquement dans [book:Parade nuptiale]) n'ose même pas trouver sa place dans ce truc totallement pitoyable ...
Et je ne parlerai pas ... bon, en fait, je vais en parler tout de suite, de l'intrigue totallement téléphonée : nos braves mochetés se retrouvent à partir dans une chasse aux reliques permettant la restauration de leur continent, envahi par des hordes roses. Il n'y a même pas de quoi pavoiser : les orcs ne sont pas les Méchants envahisseurs à la solde d'un traître, mais de pauvres soldats vendus à une magicienne dont le plus grand vice est l'abus de sexe sur esclaves torturés. Pas très imaginatif, tout ça. Et, pire que le manque d'imagination, vraiment pas transgressif : mis à part la couleur de la peau qui change, ce sont juste des héros de base.
Le héros en chef sauve ses ennemis de toujours, réfléchit au bien commun, et cherche le meilleur pour tous, quitte à se sacrifier.
Franchement, au niveau de la transgression, j'ai trouvé [book:la compagnie noire] beaucoup plus méchant, avec ses mercenaires qui se vendaient aux deux camps pendant le même conflit.
Et pourtant, la compagnie noire ne m'a pas tant réjoui que ça ... Enfin, l'intérêt des bouquins de [author:Glen Cook] s'était épuisé assez rapidement. Alors c'est pour dire si ce début de trilogie m'a profondément ennuyé. Bref, c'était lamentable. Et heureusement, c'est fini.

Interesting concept for a book. The whole story evolves around an orc war-clan in the service of a Queen sorceress. During an excursion to retrieve a mysterious artifact, the plan goes awry and the clan is faced with the option of returning to the Queen and facing her wrath, or turning rogue to unravel the mystery of the artifact.
If you are interested in fantasy, I think the book is worth the read. While the story easily kept my attention, there are some flaws. The setting of the story (a world called Maras-Dantia) doesn't seem very lively to me (like Westeros in Game of Thrones, or Middle-Earth in The Hobbit/Lord of the Rings). I also think character development is lacking, but I am hoping the next two books will solve that issue. With all that said, the book was intriguing to me. Stan Nicholls utilizes multiple fantasy creatures, and they blend together nicely. It also interests me with Orcs as the main character, and humans as the bad guys. I will definitely continue with the series, and have already added Stan Nicholls to my list of authors.

Not a bad tale. What makes this a little different from he other fantasy quest books, is the leads are normally the enemies. Orcs have a bad rep in fantasy; ruthless, nameless killers of the big bad.
Here they do work for a big bad, and my gosh she's got some interesting habits, but it's reluctant employees here, and the enemy are the humans, draining Magic from the world, killing the elder races; Orcs, dwarfs, elves, and generally being an unlikable race.
Spike sets out on a mission, and things get from bad to worse, with the only option clear fairly soon; if they want to keep their insides, inside, they need to have an advantage, so they go on a quest seeking it.
This is the first in a trilogy, and it ends on a cliffhanger, with three of our main characters in a sticky situation. We're not sure why the books were released like this, as a few years later the trilogy was collected into a nice weighty tome. We're publishers afraid of big fantasy books?
If you like classic feel fantasy, quest still, but want something a bit different from the band of humans with other races tagged on, then this should satisfy you.
