Definitely 3 stars if it weren’t so long. Was there a time in my life that I would give this book more stars? Yes. If I had read it before the age of 25, I’d have given it 5. If I had read it after the age of 25 but before tutoring Koreans, when Korea and Japan were both exotic for me, I would have given it 4 stars. If I’d read it before The Good Earth, I’d have given it 4. And finally, if I had not read Kane and Abel first, I might have given it even a 6.

Esta novela te sumerge en la vida y costumbres y el sentir, a detalle de una familia coreana desde principios del siglo XX y por casi 90 años.
La autora muestra la realidad ancestral del pueblo coreano. Los sufrimientos durante la guerra con Japón y la división de su patria.
Aunque las costumbres sean muy diferentes a las occidentales, los personajes están tan humanamente desarrollados que te los crees y sientes conocerlos. Mujeres aveces sumisas pero siempre fuertes. Hombres orgullosos pero trabajadores. Jóvenes confundidos y rebeldes aveces pero con espíritu de superación y todos con una necesidad perenne de pertenencia, de unidad.
Un drama histórico que conmueve. Te traslada a la vida de inmigrante a lo que se ve expuesta una sociedad entera en un país extranjero que no los acepta aunque nazcan nuevas generaciones en el territorio.
Me ha gustado conocer la historia de todos. Los buenos, los malos, las mujeres, los hombres, los niños, los ancianos, los ricos, los pobres… imposible no empatizar. Historias de vidas reales que les tocó enfrentar situaciones extremas y que lo hicieron lo mejor que pudieron.
Familia, honor, lealtad, honor, principio, progreso, dolor, inmigración, búsqueda de identidad, sociedad… casi 90 años de historia.
Me ha gustado mucho! Un viaje de lo más interesante al otro lado del mundo. La recomiendo.
