20 years ago (Jesus h. Christ, how?) I gave this five stars. I still think it’s a fascinating science fiction tale about an alternate history where a superpowered being emerges in the Soviet Union. I just don’t know if it’s Superman. Yes, this character ostensibly wants to do good for humanity but Millar seems incapable of conceiving of an alternate Superman who doesn’t become corrupted by his powers without the inherent purity of good ole American individualism to keep him on the straight and narrow. Superman is supposed to be decent at his core and yes, the nurture of the Kent’s had much to do with it but part of that is fundamentally just who he is. This Superman is fine with lobotomizing his dissidents, how did we get there?

And the ending redemption of Luthor and his descendants into intellectual superheroes who save humanity and lead the world, with America steadfastly in front, into utopia and then eventually back into a circular reality? I’m sorry, what the actual fuck was that about?

I'm sure this is really deep and insightful to political reading a holes but this was genuinely the funniest fucking thing I've read in a long long time. Thank you Mark Millar I needed the comedy.

Wowsers.

Instantly became one of my favorite comic books. Nuanced, smart and with an ending that's just brilliant. A must-read.

What if Superman's ship had fallen in a small Ukranian farm instead of good old Kansas?
The premise of this story is brilliant and the inevitable development of how the world would turn because of it was done in a way that made you think, "this sounds about right." Loved it from beginning to end!
