I loved it & the ending was great (I’m a sucker for that sort of trope) but the whole Brainiac was outsmarting Kal the whole time thing? very random and rushed… I wish there was more build up and proof of that….

The best part of this miniseries about Superman as a commie? Batman. Perhaps the most badass take on Batman I've read. This one is tons of fun.

I love "What if ?" storylines and this one is as entertaining as they get.

Anyone who legitimately thinks Superman isn't smart enough to come up with a version of socialism that does not rely on reeducation camps and purges clearly doesn't understand Superman. Superman wouldn't be Stalin's stooge for a hot second, and he certainly wouldn't continue his nightmarish legacy after he was finally dead. Ultimately, Red Son fails because it wants to have its cake and eat it. It wants to pretend that Superstalinist can be the same good-hearted person that Supes is, while still telling a story where Stalinism is bad. Can't be done. And the solution is appallingly easy: just do what any leftist theorist with half a brain has done for the past half-century and do socialism without Stalinism. Let Superman embody an ideal that isn't, yknow, morally disgusting.

But the ending is pretty good. Actually, if you took it off and stuck it on any other Superman story it would be an awesome ending.

Superman isn't my cup of tea, but I though "hell, let's give this a chance". I was sourly mistaken in doing that. No only did we hit the savior complex HARD, we had the added bonus of "all hail America". Because America just had to triumph. No one in any other country could have done a better job. And of course the Soviet Union had to fall to shambles after Superman was gone. Can America not fall just once? Listen, I have nothing against the US. I love the US for many reasons, but the superiority complex Americans have is just cringy.

10/10 on the "America deserves to colonize other countries" scale.

As a Superman story I think it's great to explore different ideas with the character.

As a alternative DC universe story it's just as if not more awesome.

As a comicbook it's pretty rad.

All around though I think anybody who likes Superman or the DC universe should give it a read.

Boy am I a sucker for alternate realities.

In this re-imagining, Superman landed in Russian not Smallville, USA and grew up to become a Communist icon and leader. Genius idea, what hero is more American than Superman? Let's put him in the Cold War, but as a Russian asset. All the classic characters are also re-imagined, Lois, Lex, Wonder Woman, Batman, Bizarro, Brainiac, yet they are still very true to who they are at their core. This is what is most impressive, Lex is still an obnoxious baddie but somehow the hero, Superman is still righteous and good, but also the villain, masterful!

This book covers a lot of ground, like entire lifetimes, yet it still manages to be interesting and fast paced.

My only hang up is the bizarre ending
SpoilerWe go so far into the future that we discover Jor-L (Jor-El) is a descendant of Lex and Krypton is actually Earth. He doesn't send Supes to another planet, just back in time (1938) creating a time loop. It was weird and felt out of step with the rest of the story, but I guess it was some sort of statement since this means Superman isn't actually an alien interfering with the lives of humans, but actually a time traveler interfering in the lives of humans? Well it definitely has me thinking. I just found it to be unnecessary like the majority of M. Night Shyamalan films.

Overall, I think this is one of the best non-canon comic out there and a must read for any Superman fan!

Actually pretty good and with none of the over the top hyper writing I've come to expect from Millar.
