I really did not like this book. A Lion King retelling. The female main character was weak and annoying. The male main character was problematic in the worst ways. He threatened to have female characters SA'd and was very possessive in a bad way. Ick!

DNF @ p121

Oh this was so not it

• Tristan is genuinely just a prick with a god complex and not in a hot way, like in a ‘you’re worthless’ way and it’s not cute
• there is zero chemistry and we’re so far in ??? I’m ok with a slow burn but this is glacial
• I don’t know if it’s because I wasn’t expecting historical fantasy but this is not working for me at all

TWs (until p121): death of father (before book), toxic family, alcohol consumption, smoking, drug use, nightmares, gore, decapitation (off page), sexism, scarring/body horror, bullying, blood, torture, murder

Dark and twisted, I was glued to the pages for two days straight. I loved our two main characters. Tristan was unapologetically violent and it was perfect. This book was a ride and I adored every second.

I was expecting a lot more after reading Hooked, and this book was a huge disappointment. The characters were absolutely awful.
75% of the book was just Tristan’s internal monologues of how he deserved the throne, yet he’s an entitled, manipulative narcissist that tortured his followers! Who with half a brain cell would want to put him on the throne? Sara B. had the personality of a soggy waffle.
Simon and Timothy were the only redeeming characters. The setting was  also just poorly developed. Why was it set in the 1900s? Where was this country? I was convinced this was fantasy until someone mentioned Paris wtf.
