Skip the book; watch the movie ("Sweet Bean," check Kanopy through your library).

The book seems to be a good short story that has been padded. It starts to lose steam halfway through, when the bird shows up.

The second half is a history lesson in the format of dialogue. It goes something like this:
Character 1: "history...blah...blah...history...blah...blah."
Character 2: "Wow!"
Character 3: "Tell us more!"
Character 1: "More history...blah...blah...more history...blah...blah."

I began to weed my garden while listening so I wouldn't be wasting time. I increased the audiobook speed. Still it went on and on. Facts are repeated again and again.

Letters are written. They go like this:
Character 1: "XYZ."
Character 2 writing in reply: "Thank you for telling me about X and Y and Z."

Towards the end of the book, Character 1 writes one last letter, tying up ends that are not loose and asking the recipient to forgive any repetition. I don't forgive it!

We get at least two dream sequences. In real life, it's boring to hear someone describe their dream, and it's no better here.

The author -- or maybe it was the translator -- does not like to use plain ol' "said" so we get "she answered, he commented, she replied..." (I have a Shelf for "subs for said.")

This book would be good for someone who is confused by symbolism, because here, it's all spelled out.

The screenwriter of the movie did a good job taking just the best parts.

Fez-me ficar fã.

ceritanya hangat, saat baca buku ini rasanya seperti ada yang menemani. banyak yang dapat di ambil dari buku ini such as life lessons for how to take your life slowly, finding the meaning why you should live. keberadaan tokue reminds me dengan kehangatan yang diberikan oleh seorang nenek. her life is hard but she tried to live she really TRIED no matter how bitter the truth is kehangatan dari tokue berhasil membawa orang-orang di sekitarnya jadi lebih tenang. buku ini berhasil bikin aku nangis berkali-kali aku kagum banget sama tokue meskipun ceritanya tergolong simple tpi ini kena banget di aku pribadi.

YES oh my gosh what a beautiful, warm, cute, sad, and touching book that also includes delicious food! This is everything I could have wanted from this book. I loved just how complicated and unique each of the characters' back stories were, and the representation that came with each. U found the reveal about Tokue's past to be so well done, because even though I had my suspicions about it, I never fully guessed or understood the effects of the situation until it was talked about. This is a pretty short read, so I don't want to say too much and give everything away, but I highly recommend it!
