This was a sweet and quick read! I really liked the friendship that evolved between Tokue and Sentaro:)just a shame that it had to end with Tokue dying. I was hoping she could come back to the dorayaki shop, or that Sentaro would open his own shop . The ending felt a little bit abrupt.
This book was sweet and easy to read, but also challenged me to think about how I experience life (and is still continuing to do so, in a way that I think will stay with me).
I finished Sweet Bean Paste a week ago and it's still very present with me; I feel emotional even thinking about it every time it pops into my head. For that reason I had to write a fuller review (I usually avoid saying too much as I don't want to overly influence anyone's opinion of a book before they read it, but I also want people to know just how much I recommend reading this).
It's a story set up to explain the author's outlook on life in a beautiful way, but it does it without being too saccharine. The detail is exquisite and the overarching message is achingly powerful. The ending afforded such soul-warming kindness.
It kind of reminds me of the way I felt after reading Flowers for Algernon for the first time, but more optimistic. Would recommend to anyone who enjoyed that. Also to anyone who enjoys rich storytelling in a Japanese setting. Also to anyone who has ever felt worthless or loved someone who felt that way.
Honestly I'd probably recommend anyone to give it a try, if they enjoyed it half as much as me it'd easily be worth the read!
