I found the book to be very sweet. It’s a story about healing and friendship. The beginning was really good but it started to feel slow towards the middle. My only negative was that I felt that it took a while for the writing to reach its point but it started to pick up again towards the end. It’s a bittersweet book and all the characters experience growth. It’s a story about growing with the people around you and I think Sukegawa did a great job of writing three characters all of different ages and experiences, that all learn from each other.
একসময়ে সেনতারোর স্বপ্ন ছিল সে লেখক হবে। কিন্তু সময়ের পরিক্রমায় ধ্বসে পড়ে সে স্বপ্ন। এক মাদকচক্রের সাথে জড়িয়ে যায়, পুলিশের কাছে ধরা পড়বার পর বেশ দীর্ঘকাল হাজতবাস। কারাগার থেকে বের হবার পর দিন চালানো আর ঋণ শোধের উপায় হিসাবে কাজ করা শুরু করে ছোট্ট একটি কনফেকশনারি শপে। দোকানের একমাত্র কর্মচারি সেনতারো, হাতে গোণা কয়েকজন ক্রেতা সামলাতে সমস্যা হয় না তার। মালকিন মাসে দু'মাসে একবার করে খোঁজ নিয়ে যায়। সেনতারো নিজে মিষ্টি খাবার সইতে পারে না, যদিও বিক্রি করে দোরায়াকি - যা কিনা একধরণের Sweet bean paste-এর পুর দেয়া প্যানকেক। ভালো খাবার তৈরি করার মতো ধৈর্য বা আকাঙ্ক্ষা কিছুই কাজ করে না তার মধ্যে - তাই প্যানকেকের bean paste-টি পর্যন্ত সে নিজে না বানিয়ে তৈরিকৃত পণ্য আনিয়ে নেয়।
একদিন বৃদ্ধা এক মহিলা Tokue কনফেকশনারিতে আসে কাজের খোঁজে। মহিলার বয়স সত্তর পার হয়ে গিয়েছে, তার উপরে হাতের আঙ্গুলগুলো কোনো এক অজানা কারণে অস্বাভাবিক বিকৃত - সেনতারো স্বভাবতই তাকে কাজে নিতে রাজি হয় না। মহিলা বারবার ফিরে আসতে থাকে, এরমধ্যে একদিন সেনতারো জানতে পারে বৃদ্ধা পঞ্চাশ বছর যাবত sweet bean paste তৈরি করছে। তার কর্মক্ষমতা আর তার হাতে বানানো bean paste দেখার পর আশ্চর্যান্বিত হয়ে যায় সেনতারো। কাজে নিয়ে নেয় বৃদ্ধাকে। সময় গড়ায় - কনফেকশনারি শপটিকে ঘিরে গড়ে উঠে কিছু দারুণ বন্ধুত্ব।।

জাপানিজ উপন্যাস থ্রিলার জন্রা ছাড়া আগে তেমন পড়া হতো না, ইদানীংকালে "Convenience Store Woman", "Strange Weather In Tokyo" ধরণের কয়েকটা বই পড়ে কনটেম্পোরারিতে আগ্রহ জেগেছে। বইতে খুব বেশি দার্শনিক কথাবার্তা ব্যক্তিগতভাবে তেমন একটা টানে না আমাকে, যেজন্য জাপানিজ অনেক বই এড়িয়ে যাই। কনটেম্পোরারিগুলোতে এটা কম দেখা যায় বলে খানিকটা নিশ্চিন্তে পড়ি।
"Sweet Bean Paste" নামের মতো সুইট একটা বই ছিলো। কিংবা বলা যায় bittersweet. সেনতারো grey character, তাকে পছন্দ করবেন নাকি অপছন্দ করবেন এটা রীতিমতো গালে হাত দিয়ে ভাবতে হবে - কারণ তার সম্পর্কে লেখক একেবারে পরিষ্কার ধারণা দেন নি। সেনতারোর অতীত পছন্দনীয় নয়, কিন্তু সেটার জন্য সে আফসোস করে - কিছু বদভ্যাস সে ছাড়তে পারে নি, অন্যদিকে সে নরম স্বভাবের, কিছুটা দিশেহারা ধরণের। Tokue-র মাধ্যমে তার মাঝে ইতিবাচক পরিবর্তন আসে - যদিও সেটা অনিশ্চিতভাবে।
একসময়ের ভয়াবহ ছোঁয়াচে একটি রোগের ভুক্তভোগীদের কষ্টকর, কঠিন জীবনযাত্রা, সমাজবিচ্ছিন্নভাবে বেঁচে থাকা, সুস্থ হবার পরেও সবার কাছে অচ্ছুতের মতো ব্যবহার পাওয়া, স্বাভাবিক জীবনের জন্য হাহাকার ফুটে উঠেছে Tokue চরিত্রের মধ্য দিয়ে। সেনতারোকে সে নিজের ছেলের মতো স্নেহ করে, তাকে হাতেকলমে শেখানোর চেষ্টা করে আজীবনে নিজে যা শিখেছে। বইতে আরেকটি আগ্রহ-জাগানিয়া চরিত্র ছিল স্কুলছাত্রী ওয়াকানা। বাড়ি যাবার সময়ে দোরায়াকির খোঁজে নিয়মিত শপে আসতে আসতে যার বন্ধুত্ব হয় Tokue-র সঙ্গে, পরবর্তীতে সেনতারোর সঙ্গেও।

I thought this book would be light hearted easy read.. I will smile at the end like used to do after finishing most of the happy and comfort reads. I was wrong. I am totally devastated. I can't even write the review.
Tokue, Sentaro and Wakana have their own way of making their way to your heart. You can't even notice how and when you were attached to them. most of all the main theme of this book is not the Sweet bean paste it just a something that led you too the actual plot of the book. Something we never really give a tought about. A deseas can be something minor because we have a lot of options to treat it. The same was not possible fifty or sixty years back. Many lives were destroyed because of it. True as there was no cure but taking them away from their family and even take away the last piece of rememberance of the family was too much cruel. To cope with it these people may have created their own world and when they were finally allowed to go to the outer world, Tokue jjst jumped to help Santaro to make the sweet bean paste even show him what should he do next in life.

Well shit, this book was insanely good, one of those books you wish you read earlier on.
East Asians have a way of writing about disabilities and the struggle with it while being depressed or shunned from a society that doesn’t understand your disability.
This shit made me tear up in the park, those last few chapters of the old lady talking about her being forced into the facility at a young age makes you deeply wonder about certain parts of these “perfect” tourist countries that pride themselves on making themselves be seen as progressive or far ahead with technology and politeness. While locking away and removing disabled people from society.
It was deeply hard hitting reading about how anyone depressed should be able to experience freedom and enjoying life just like anyone else.
