I loved this book. It had the perfect balance between being descriptive enough for me to imagine myself in that world and not being too wordy.

The ending took off 1.5 stars for me because the story just ended so abruptly. I would have liked to get a glimpse into the future to see how characters did in the future. It is as if the last quarter of the book just isn't there.

tokue's story felt really valuable with discussion of stigma related to a visible illness & some history of leprosy. i liked how prejudice and ignorance was portrayed in a central character without ill intent & with willingness to learn and empathize. thematically the meaningfulness of life regardless of productivity was something i _know_ but have a hard time accepting, so tokue & sentaro's different views were important to me. simple language & easy to follow, with topics and themes that resonated made for a great read at this point in time
