─I loved Fourth Wing─

It definitely satisfied my craving for another good story with dragons. If that's what you're looking for too (but with a darker twist), you'll probably like this series. It wasn't mind-blowingly amazing to me, but I still really enjoyed reading it and don't have any big gripes (hence the 4.75 stars) ✩✩✩✩✧.

─Overall─

Everything is in my own opinion, of course. I'm no critic and don't intend to be; I read and rate books solely based on how much fun or interest I have in reading them. That being said, I think the pace was pretty good, it had a solid and interesting plot, good worldbuilding, and a loveable and diverse cast of characters (˶ᵔ ᵕ ᵔ˶).

─The Romance─

The love interest/romance may be a bit cliche(?) for some people, but I loved it. I think it's worth noting that it is a sort of unique type of 'enemies-to-lovers' that I would not qualify as slow-burn. I say this because
most of the tension between them is just inside her head, and he falls for her quickly. It is technically an enemies-to-lovers in the sense that Xaden has every right to hate Violet, but he doesn't really show this hate for her.
But I'm easy to please, so this didn't bother me ദ്ദി(˵ •̀ ᴗ - ˵ ). In addition, I'd say the spice level was tastefully low, with very few but good chapters ( ͡° ͜ʖ ͡°).

─Story and Writing─

I loved the world and plot of this book ٩(ˊᗜˋ )و . It feels realistic and detailed without being too confusing or too simple.
The plot twists are great and built up perfectly!
There aren't any plotholes that I could find, which is great because I need plots and events to be thoroughly explained to enjoy a book. I generally thought the writing was decent, but it really excelled in battle/action scenes, which kept me hooked ᕙ(  •̀ ᗜ •́  )ᕗ. I also enjoyed the occasional humour, as it often lined up with what I was already thinking, which I think is a good touch.

─TLDR─

If you like dragons, hot/strong/funny characters, good action scenes,
plot twists
, magic, a dark setting/aesthetic, and (sometimes steamy) romance, then you'll probably like this book ദ്ദി ˉ͈̀꒳ˉ͈́ ).

I hated this book. It was essentially a modge podge of every popular ya fantasy but they cussed and there were explicit scenes.

I really wanted to dislike this book. Rebecca Yarros has made some… questionable choices in her writing and her public presence, but when a coworker lent me the book I figured I might as well see if the hype was worth it. And yeah, her writing can be lazy and the romance made my skin crawl at times, but DAMN. This book pulled me IN. It really reminded me of the fantasy I loved so much in middle school but written for me as a 20-something. I mean, the Divergent parallels are so strong. But there are things that I think Yarros did well. I loved how she included a disabled main character and didn’t have magic just, cure her (bonus points for including a Deaf/Hard of Hearing character!). There is queer representation (albeit mostly in background characters) without being weird. And as I reached the latter part of the book I felt that the story became more unique. I’ll be diving into the second installment with relish, but I’ve still got my eye on you, Rebecca.

This book grips you when you start reading. It acts all unassuming before it grabs your hand and bolts, and as such you are just there now for a ride and there is no way to stop. I don't think I could explain my experience with this book any other way.

I went in thinking this would be a fun read and see what everyone was talking about, and It started off ok. I thought it was interesting and I wasn't 100% sure how I would feel about Violet as she comes across as a bit off to me. By the time we get into the academy I had grown to like Violet and very quickly I could see that Rebecca can write very compelling and complex characters, and by the end of the book I had grown to love them all.
I think the world building was fascinating. I keep wondering to myself what would a dragon riding academy be like and I think Rebecca did a really good job at bringing that idea to life. I would say that for the most part the book is not focused on the overall plot of the series but instead getting us invested in the people and the world so when we start getting to the bigger picture the stakes and consequences of everything has a much greater impact, because of that I don't think the overall plot had much development. I didn't mind this though as establishing the academy was still every interesting the the overall plot for the book, which is to bond a dragon and survive, was still thrilling and gripping.

By the end of the book i was so glad that my library had the second audiobook as I needed to start that right away.
