I really wanted to dislike this book. Rebecca Yarros has made some… questionable choices in her writing and her public presence, but when a coworker lent me the book I figured I might as well see if the hype was worth it. And yeah, her writing can be lazy and the romance made my skin crawl at times, but DAMN. This book pulled me IN. It really reminded me of the fantasy I loved so much in middle school but written for me as a 20-something. I mean, the Divergent parallels are so strong. But there are things that I think Yarros did well. I loved how she included a disabled main character and didn’t have magic just, cure her (bonus points for including a Deaf/Hard of Hearing character!). There is queer representation (albeit mostly in background characters) without being weird. And as I reached the latter part of the book I felt that the story became more unique. I’ll be diving into the second installment with relish, but I’ve still got my eye on you, Rebecca.

This is an AMAZING book (I can definitely see why it won so many awards)! Like a Divergent + The Poppy War all-in-one package deal. The world-building was exquisite, detailed, and well-fleshed-out! I can tell Rebecca Yarros put in a lot of time and energy into this book, and it turned out fantastically. I loved the academy setting, the trials and dragon-choosing, and of course, the characters. Violet is and will forever be one of my favorite heroines. She's short (like me), smaller, and appears weaker than the others, but behind her "fragile" exterior, she has a will made of iron and is one of the toughest (and most inspiring) people ever.
Xaden is also definitely a favorite. He's mysterious and has too many secrets, but he pushes Violet to be her best and doesn't hold her back (*cough cough* Dain). The one thing I would say is that the sexual content is very mature (I had to skip several scenes) and the book would be the same level of great (and probably even better) if it was YA instead of NA.
I can't wait for the rest of the series!

This book reads like a fantasy-flavored reimagining of Divergent. It's a fun read that feels predictable throughout. If you're looking for a romance novel and you like a fantasy setting, this might be a good option. If you're looking for enemies to lovers and LGBTQI+ representation - I would look elsewhere.
