My new favorite series that I feel will soon become my entire personality. Every single spare moment of time and brain space I have had was dedicated to thinking about this world, these characters. I’ve never fallen in love with a series quite like this as an adult. I am totally immersed and enamored- this book and series has pulled me out of some dark places and helped me to escape into the most fantastical world inside my head. Not a fan of the audiobook narrator, but I got used to her. Fantastic characters and writing. Feels like I'm back in a world like TOG.

My biggest criticism of this book is that Yarros included a lot of language and sexual themes to get out of the YA category, but this book has a very YA feel. The angst, the verbiage used by the characters, the overall feel is very young adult. It is fitting as some of our cadets in this college are around 20ish years old. I just felt like she didn't know what genre she wanted to write for.
That big criticism aside, the book was well written, the landscapes beautifully described. The dragons are the best, it is my first time reading a fantasy book with dragons that are the decision makers and can communicate with humans, this was my favorite part! I don't know how to spell her name as I did the audio book but Darna was my favorite and I can't wait to hear about her changes in book 2!
The typical love triangle was predictable from the start, too often the 'boy next door' turns out to be a dick and the dark bad boy turns out to be the 'good guy'. They threw in a loop at the end, but we all know how this will turn out
Overall I enjoyed it and I'm looking forward to book 2.
