I read this in two days and I never put it down I ate slept and breathed this book until I finished it and can’t wait for the next one
3/5 ☆
I would rather lose this entire war than live without you, and if that means I have to prove myself over and over, then I'll do it. You gave me your heart, and I'm keeping it.
I still don’t know if I love this book or I hate it. I had so much fun while reading it, I really like Xaden or Ridoc, even Violet (just a little tho). The plot was amazing and even though I predicted some things, I still was shocked by some events.
Also I have hate-love relationship with romance in this book? I love the tension between Violet and Xaden, I love their interactions, I was going crazy when they showed a little bit of affection to each other. Still, sometimes it was just??? too rough? too vulgar? and I think this change in Xaden from cold bastard to the person who knows how much he loves Violet, was a little bit too fast, but I still enjoyed it.
In the end, I really like this book, I think I’ll recommend it to other people, but sometimes it gave me the ick. Still I’m gonna read the second part and I’m going to enjoy it

My first ‘hate read’ of the year.
Aside from the needless sex scenes, it’s really not that bad. The hinted magic and lore make this an accessible if not fulfilling book, and the FMC is a total self-insert, however as an avid Dramione writer, I can hardly blame Yarros.
I’ll finish the series, if only for completionists sake and to wash the sun eater disappointment from my mind.

I really enjoyed this. It was such a fun romp through a fantasy world I've not really read about before. I'd say Harry Potter meets Game of Thrones?
I suspect it's aimed at older teenagers, possibly early 20s? The characters in it are such better roll models than I think characters in books I read at that age were. I love that she's feisty, and that is celebrated! I love that the heros amd heroines in this are three dimensional, and have flaws. That they have to work at things, and their powers and skills don't just come right away (like they did in some of the cartoons / films / stories I grew up with).
Not sure if I was supposed to laugh at some of the exaggerated sex scenes? Or maybe that was deliberate? I imagined it kind of Ryan Renaulds / Dead Pool funny - when the trees got set alight and lightening flashes... literal sparks flying!
I think my favourite "saucey" scene wastheir first kiss. I listened rather than read, but suspect it was many pages long! She is a master of building up the sexual tension.
Like others have said, I enjoyed the chapters retold from another characters point of view.
The mix of characters felt appropriate, and although this is fantasy - somewhat representative of real life. I appreciated having strong, powerful female characters - e.g. Her Mum and sister, several female professors, Zaydans dragon (?Segale), also I noticed a couple of characters with they/them pronouns, and passing references to let you know one character was bisexual, but without making a big deal about it.
When Violet needed a harness in order to stay on her dragon , I wondered if that was a metaphor for reasonable accommodations in real life? She worked her ass of to learn, but was physically incapable. So having a harness made both her and her dragon safer and more comfortable and allowed them both to focus on their powers. And just because other people CAN do without, that doesn't mean she SHOULD. And she was still friggin awsome! Such a fabulous, powerful message to younger readers. Well, all readers! I'd loved to have this kind of message when I was younger, but I'm learning from it now!
I didn't like some of the fight/battle scenes. They were too graphic, upsetting, and went on for far too long for my liking.
But other than that, what a wonderful, progressive, modern romp of a book.
