I thought this book was edging me on on topics that I wanted to know more about. The author briefly mentioned topics such as racism, white privilege, and classism. I didn’t quite understand why the author mentioned them without having those conversations. I guess considering <possible spoiler> the ending those conversations couldn’t be had. I also thought the book was kinda slow, it focused heavily on the MC Cady Sinclair and her wading through her memories and remembering them which I personally didn’t like. I did like how the author put what the MC was going through in a fairytale format. It was really creative and told a story without actually confessing anything, which I feel like is very reminiscent of the Sinclair family. There were parts where I wasn’t sure where the MC was being dramatic and where the MC was being serious. She mentions a part where
her dad shoots her??? and then turns out it was a metaphor for him hurting her??? I don’t know I was confused…
. I liked how the book kept me asking questions along with the MC, I spent the whole book trying to figure out what else happened and how it fit in the story. I loved the ending and was not really expecting it and it made me cry so hard. I liked this book and would read it once more in the future to see if I get more of it.

Very slow moving. I was under the impression it was a quick read, I repeat, that is not the case. Almost put me in a reading slump but I always need to finish a book. It wasn't too bad, was not expecting the ending. Very sad in the end. Very confusing in the beginning. However, I did like trying to guess the ending throughout the book.

the writing! is so good! idt it could ever be turned into a movie bc it just wouldn't make sense that way n it doesn't have that same poetic effect y’know? i might be overreacting n overanalyzing but sm symbolism in the character's thoughts n words n parallels is really well written, but very easy to read.

the plot is so unexpected and i love the switches between the flashbacks and the memories. although i kinda wish it wasnt a
ghost story and it was just hallucinations instead,
would hv made it alot better

This book made me cry and was also one of the most fun books I've read this year. Hooked me right from the start and kept me guessing right to the very end.

Since this is such a strong "go in blind book" that you shouldn't even know anything before reading the first page, time to spoiler tag my entire review.
first off, I really liked the writing style. I like quick reads and the fact there were less words per line made me finish this book in a day. It was easy for me to read, as well, even though some of the metaphors seemed more literal than figurative (I've seen other reviews wonder if Cady explaining her blood wrists were just a metaphor, and honestly, I dont know either).
Other than that, I actually found myself relating to the main character. I'm poor as fuck, never committed a crime, and dont have migraines - but I do have memory loss due to neurological issues that wiped most of my teenage memories completely and made my mother constantly worried about me. I understood when she said she didn't want to be pitied, and then Gat said well why the fuck you saying all this shit about your migraines then. Like, dude, just because she doesn't want to be pitied doesn't mean her migraines poof! become less of her life.
And same with the romance. Sadly I still remember some of my pathetic flings, how as a youngster you think the first love is real and forever and the best thing since Betty White. The romance was a damn mess but didn't we all make bad, cringey, makes us look back and think "oh no girl what are you doing" type relationship choices as teens.
And.. the twist. Goddamnit I picked it up right away.. when Cady realized no one was responding to her emails. Yeah the first thought should be "they're too rich to care about their email account", but with how absent they were my mind went straight to "they're dead aren't they. Oh no you better not". And they were. Even worse, why not throw them in as ghosts and badly explain the whole entire last part of the book. And the whole reveal be a fire. All died in a fire. And became ghosts. What a twist. Yaaaawn. When it comes to rich people drama, The Cousins by Karen McManus came out on top. That's the type of twist I was looking for, not something on the same level as "it was all just a dream!" (But instead, replace dream with ghosts).
