This book has an overwhelming sense of melancholy, it practically drips from the pages. Everyone in it seems sad, lost and with little hope. Even the ending offers no resolution, just more struggle for the characters.

I ploughed through this book in one afternoon; I found it incredibly gripping. I found this book to be more psychological than sci-fi; it pulls on themes on falling into addiction, greed, loneliness, and despair.
I thoroughly enjoyed the style of writing, and found the perspective of American society from an alien’s point of view very intriguing.

What an unbelievably sad and gentle science fiction read. An alien has come to Earth, not to invade but to save us from ourselves. Like so many of us humans who begin with lofty intentions, intending to sacrifice all for their cause, Newton's mission is doomed to failure and he is ultimately left a broken 'man'.
I don't think I have ever called a sci fi book beautiful, but this truly was a beautiful, melancholy, thought-provoking read.
