Another warm, cozy blanket of a Maine story from Linda Holmes. I loved this story of family, friends, history, and how we define “home.”

I thoroughly enjoyed this book. Family intrigue, rekindling romance and some laugh out loud moments made for a fun romp.

Not everyone will love this book as much as I did, but if I could give this six stars, I would. It’s so well written, funny and touching, that I feel like it elevates the genre of romance novel, if genre even matters here. Personally, much like Evvie Drake came along when I was leaving a marriage and I still have pieces of that book with me, Flying Solo arrived after I had experienced loss, and I felt parts in my solar plexus. It is a charming book that made me laugh again and again, and deeply thoughtful in a really impressive way. If it is a romance it avoids cliches and tropes and I ended up somewhere I didn’t expect, which was a total pleasure. I feel like Linda is only growing as a writer; this may be even better than her first book and I’m thankful she has a deal for another, I would basically follow her anywhere she chooses to go.

I had difficulty caring about any of the characters in this book. I was most intrigued by the woman who had already died and her life. Woman goes back to her hometown when her favorite aunt dies to clear her belongings and find a mysterious wooden duck. Much of the book focuses on said wooden duck, which I also didn’t care about.

Such a good book. I rarely find modern fiction I like so this was satisfying. It’s well written and it’s great to have a female protagonist who is over 40 and isn’t interested in marriage or kids. On top of that there’s a (not high stakes) heist and I love heists. This is the authors second book and I’ll be checking out her first.

You don't have to be single to be independent. And you don't have to be married to be loved. Also, there's a wooden wood duck acting like an anchor to the book. It was sweet and kind.
