This was funny & ridiculous but also so sweet.
Laurie has been tasked with handling the estate of her great aunt Dot - during the process she discovers a mysterious wooden duck that essentially sets the stage for our story.
Laurie’s determination to find out the story behind this duck leads to a series of events: out-scamming a local con artist, flirting with the possibility of rekindling an old flame & questioning what the rest of her life could look like.
“You don’t have to be single to be independent & you don’t have to be married to be loved.”
I enjoyed the portrayal of a woman who was confident in the life she wanted & I think the book did a good job of portraying a beautiful sweet romance without compromising core traits of both characters.
Overall a lovely read !

Since turning 40, and recently losing my grandmother this book was recommended by a friend. The storyline could use some work as it drags in some places and falls flat in others. I have not read Linda Holmes’ other book, but if I can get it I will definitely give it a try.
When locating a duck, Laurie sells it to an antique dealer that deals in bereavement “antiques”, and then later figures out he scammed her.
Honestly this book’s premise would have been better served as a mystery and not a romance where a self-aware, supposedly independent woman only ends up with the guy for sex.
Giving this book 3 stars is truly generous; however, I also realize while the book is not my cup of tea, others will enjoy it.

A love letter to independence and living life on your own terms. I identified very deeply with Laurie Sassalyn and appreciated that she was never to be pitied and never martyred herself while doing what she felt was her duty as a family member. Every Dot deserves a Laurie and every Laurie deserves complete freedom from expectations and judgment. I loved it.
I was a little apprehensive about reading this book because I had seen a couple of readers whose taste I trust saying that it didn’t work for them. And I loved her first book, so I really, really wanted to love this one too!
And great news: I did. The best way I can describe it is that it gives you the feeling you get when it’s chilly outside and you put your hands around a warm beverage. Her characters feel real and complicated, but also funny enough to make me literally lol. I spend a lot of time reading books where people kill each other or there’s magical shit happening or every other page is an explicit sex scene, and this was specifically nice because it wasn’t any of that.
I just thought it was lovely, okay?

I picked this up because I loved Evvie Drake Starts Over, so I wanted to give Linda Holmes' other book a try. This was a cute book with lovable, strong characters. I loved that the main character knew what she wanted and didn't settle or compromise what she wanted in order to be with a man. The plot was a bit uneventful, but it was still fun to follow Laurie while she figured out where she wanted her life to go, all while hunting down a wood duck!
A man saying he'll go the distance for his person? Super unrealistic.
