Laurie is facing turning forty and recently called off her wedding. Her favorite Aunt Dot has died, and Laurie is given the unenviable task of cleaning out her aunt’s house when the rest of her family is too busy to do so. She finds herself back in her small Maine childhood hometown, trying to solve the mysteries of Aunt Dot’s life and reconnecting with old friends and lovers. When she finds a strange wooden duck figure in one of her aunt’s trunks, she looks more into it, and hijinks ensue, for fun and caper-level results.
This book, this book. I have so much love for Evie Drake Starts Over that I was worried I would instantaneously not like this book, just because. It is a very different book, and Laurie and Evie are very different people. Linda Holmes has this ability to write in a way that is eloquent and soothing. There’s a genuine nature to the happenings in the story that can’t be faked. I just loved the earnest energy of this novel. Flying Solo is like going on a nice weekend R&R trip without ever leaving your house. Even though I stayed up late reading, I still didn’t feel tired the next day. I can’t recommend this one enough, it’s the perfect chill summer read.
Thanks to Ballantine Books and NetGalley for the ARC!

Who knew a “Duck Decoy Cozy Mystery Romance” was on my summer reading bingo card?
I’m shocked how much I liked this, because I disliked her first one.
Cute, even though the mystery was kinda lame, but I really liked the 2 main characters, Laurie and Nick and great-aunt Dot.

Adults acting like adults, non-traditional relationships, humor, and a duck heist!
A light hearted and fun read. It is a great pallet cleanser book.
I really enjoyed this book, you have the romance, the con, and the ending everyone wants for every character.

I liked Evvie Drake (her first book) so much more
This one was just a bit boring to me.
I did love that I was able to relate to the main character, loved her independence and that there was a lot of emphasis on not needing marriage + kids to be happy.

I enjoyed this! It’s cute, it’s different, and I finished it in one sitting. I could live in Linda Holmes mind. She has a knack for creating the most idyllic towns and writes such interesting and lovable characters in a way that seems effortless.
In this novel you’ll find: a nod to Evvie Drake, a plus size MC, childhood friends to lovers/ ex-boyfriend from high school, a bit of mystery and a duck heist!
While we still get a happy ending, I love that Flying Solo doesn’t end in your typical romance fashion. I saw a lot of myself in the main character and love the message that you don’t have to be married with kids to have a meaningful life.

I loved Laurie’s adventure and her approach to life. This was such a beautiful story and I would love more stories about Laurie, June, Ginger, Ryan or Nick.
