Adorable banter, subtly inclusive and delightfully realistic depictions of the wonders and woes of single living. Enjoyed every page more than the last. Who knew a duck decoy would have me riveted??
Setting : Maine. 4 star is rare for me. But, I love a good balance of fun and light with serious themes interspersed.
Enjoyable light read. Liked the fact that the main character was slightly plus-sized, but it wasn't a main factor in the book. The love interest is a librarian in a small Maine town, and there is a funny scene where he takes the main character on a "date" to the library to do some research. Ok, maybe this scene would only be funny to a librarian, but hey, I am a librarian. Although before they end up at the library on this date, they order steak at a restaurant -- but then the librarian dude dramatically says "this is not the right date for you", and he pays for the steak dinners and they leave immediately -- without eating their steak. I don't think the author realizes that a small town library director in Maine would only be making like 18 bucks an hour (despite his masters degree), and therefore would never leave without eating the steak dinner, ha.

Honestly this book reminds me a lot of early Katherine Center. Although there was romance, it wasn’t necessarily the central focus of the novel. At its core, a woman on the cusp of 40 is still trying to find herself in the wake of her aunt’s death and the people she reconnects with from her childhood, as well as people she meets along the way. It was a story that made me feel good.

This was a reread for me and I forgot how much I truly love this book.
As a childless Aunt lady, this book made me for so valid in my life choices. It seems so rare to find that in books. A main character being so sure of who they are and what they want.

Resonate, resonate, resonate! There is SO MUCH I resonated with in this book. Main character’s name is Laurie. ✅ Childless and almost 40 ✅ feels a bit out of place ✅. Spends tons of time reading and needing quiet time ✅ standing up for unconventional women and making their life have meaning ✅ a love story that works for you ✅ ocean side ✅
If you’ve ever dreamt about a life of adventure, this book should absolutely be on your Want to Read list. It brings you into Dot’s life through the eyes of her free-spirited niece, and teaches you that love and partnership can come in various forms.
3.5 stars. I didnt live it but it's refreshing for the protagonist to not end up pregnant by the end of the book
