This was a good novella that explores a mothers grief, and the fallout that it can take. Entertaining monster hunting action, neat use of gender exploration, a cool fantasy world. I wish that it was more fleshed out, because as a novella it feels slightly rushed. I know that it’s part of a series and I listened on audio, so maybe that’s why I felt like it could have been more.

Some jargon can take a second to catch on to but I also rarely read high fantasy, so that probably won’t be a hindrance to most readers. Story is gripping and addictive. I loved that queerness was an inherent aspect of the universe and thus not a plot point — yes to more queer stories that aren’t just about coming out! Alternate imaginings! I also appreciated that violence, while certainly present, never felt gratuitous. Beautiful, complicated, difficult relationships. Plot was complex, not confusing/overly difficult to keep track of. I cannot wait to read the rest.

Oof. I feel like I've been hit by a bus. This is such an emotionally fraught little narrative, that deals with grief and how it drives people, whether it pushes them to self destruction or to lash out. I haven't really formed many thoughts on it (because I'm still trying to come to terms with that ending) but I'll say this: if you heard the Tensorate series was good but the time skipping format of Black Tides of Heaven bothered you, then this one is a more clear linear narrative in a contained time frame. The writing and characters are just as good, although Mokoya is the focus and Akeha more of a side character. I love learning more about the magic and the world in each novella, and I appreciated the look into Mokoya's world. But for such a slim volume, this really packs an emotional punch, so be ready for it.
