I listened to the audiobook of this having really enjoyed the first in the Anglesey series. It did keep me gripped although there are a few suspensions of disbelief with the plot. Anglesey is a small island and one or two things would definitely be 'noticed' in real life. Characters are great, apart from the ghostly presence of Laura's late husband which I found a bit irritating.
I enjoyed the first book in this series, and this second book is even better! Laura Hart is now back in the police force as a DI on the island of Anglesey. Her first case is the investigation of bones found in a shallow grave.
The book is intelligently written, fast paced and well plotted. There are several twists along the way that I absolutely did not see coming! I liked that as well as the present day setting of Anglesey we are also taken back to 1980/s/90s Northern Ireland against a backdrop of 'The Troubles', which I found really interesting. DI Hart is a fantastic character with an interesting back story which continues into the present. I love the way she talks to her dead husband, and am always a fan of a cute dog in a story, and so love Elvis the Bernese Mountain dog.
I loved the narration by Alice White.

I liked the evolution of the characters, however the main plot with the IRA was not my cup of tea. Looking forward to the next one though!

Very rarely does a book which switches between past and present work for me, but this really did. Although it is part of a series, you don't feel like you miss much (if any) context and the book works as a standalone. The plot itself and the twists which followed were great and made for a really enjoyable crime thriller with a strong-minded female protagonist

⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️
It’s no secret that I am a huge fan of Simon’s work and he was the first author who reached out to me as a blogger and I will be forever grateful for that. However, that doesn’t mean I’m biased when I review his books and when I say that he writes some of the best police procedurals coming out at the moment and he nails those female characters it's completely true!

Two months since ex-Police Negotiator Laura Hart was forced back into action after the kidnap of her son, she has re-joined the force as a DI. When a skeleton is found in a crumbling castle ruin near the seaside town of Beaumaris, Anglesey, she can’t wait to prove herself by solving the case.
The victim is identified as Jamie McCann. The only thing anyone seems to know about him is that he disappeared without a trace twenty years ago.
When Laura’s investigation leads her to MI5 and the Real IRA, she knows she’s on the trail of something truly explosive. But some people will do anything to stop their secrets coming out. With the threat drawing in and her family yet again in danger, is she in too deep?
My Opinion
I have not read the first book in the series but for me, this worked well as a standalone. This book is an interesting thriller and I read the majority of the book in one sitting. There suspense from the opening pages. The plot is told through two timelines but each is clearly labelled so as to not confuse the reader.
As this was my first book by Simon McCleave, this was a great introduction.
Rating 4/5

I don't normally like books that switch between past and present but this was amazing. Need to get the third book immediately because it left me on a cliffhanger!
