Started promising, had some good references to place based community, but focused too much on abstract art that a lay person might not have reference to.

This book is NOT a "how to" unplug kind of book.

It is rather a deep exploration of the many, many ways that civilization has held productivity as the gold standard - to the detriment of almost everything else - and those who have pushed backed and resisted.

Mentally you should be prepared to get deep in the weeds and unpack the many history, art, climate and philosophy lessons that Jenny Odell packs into these pages.  There is so much to learn and digest and just when I thought "ugh this is a lot" the author brings in a personal anecdote that feels less overwhelming and I keep going.

The overall theme: Attention is GOLD. Where and what we chose to focus on individually and then collectively can change the world.

An interesting collection of ideas but it felt like the whole never emerged. Makes me want to read Hannah Arendt though.

This was better than Walden, but Jenny Odell's point is hard to follow. She states that her opinion changes as the book continues but generally argues to not drop out. It would be better to read a physical copy and take your time going through and thinking about the point of her stories. I read through it twice to try and grasp more but I already forgot everything after the second read through.

fine - it was fine. i get it - capitalism sucks the life out of us and forces our attention to the most unhealthy of places. i knew this before the book, i know this after reading the first two chapters. tbh- the introduction does it's job. i felt no real reason to continue on but gave it a shot anyway. lots of rambles all circling back to what those of us who pick up this book probably already know.
