Queer horror that centers on one of the things that I love about horror - how hopeful it can be, even in the bleakest of situations. It's a genre that is such a testament to how hard people are willing to fight just to live. Also, this really reminded me of Severance by Ling Ma. Very different style, but a similar critique of late stage capitalism, and the idea that younger gens must suffer, but also be grateful for the horrors created by greed. If you are fed up with your capitalist overlords, this is definitely a cathartic read.

My only struggle with this was that the author writes in third person omniscient and switches perspectives without chapter or page breaks. So on the same page, you'll get the thoughts and feelings of multiple different characters. Especially when first being introduced to the characters, being in one person's thoughts and then suddenly another's was a bit of whiplash and just generally confusing because there were so many characters to get to know.

Great book, nice fast read. Only reason I'm not giving it 5 stars is the map in the beginning is completely wrong, based on where things are located in relation to one another in the text. Why create a map if you can't even bother to make it right?

The concept of murderous hide & seek is always intriguing & this book was enjoyable enough. I only gave it 3 stars because it irks me when characters happen to stumble across something that spells everything out for them. It's the cliche of the villain telling the victim their master plan & ultimately ruining things for themselves because of it. Some of the characters were annoying, but that's okay because they're meant to be. The dynamic between characters is fun to see unfold & it raises the stakes to see who, if any, of them make it out alive.

First one star of 2024! 🎉
This book was not enjoyable at all.. to be fair I did laugh a couple times but that was because I felt like I was going insane. The characters were flat, their relationships with one another felt meaningless and rushed, every stereotype under the sun was chucked in there too alongside other overused horror tropes. The writing was just baffling, the perspective jumps were jarring and ruined any chance of tension + the reader is literally told the entire backstory and origin of the threat through letters. The characters don't find anything themselves and instead luckily run into someone who can tell them everything! The primary villain is cartoonish and so annoying it makes my brain explode, the 'others' are not even in the book so that's wonderful. The plot itself felt obvious too. I want to cry.

..Apologies for the disorganised 'review', it's almost 1am and I just needed to get all my thoughts out so I could sleep without my brain exploding. <3

about a third of the way through this book my thought was “this better not be cabin in the woods” and then i finished it and it was indeed just a badly done version of cabin in the woods
