This was a wild ride of a book where you follow a group of people who signed up for a hide and seek challenge at an amusement park for some money and potentially some fame.

Or is it?

The wild pace of this book was hard to keep with in a good way. However, I would definitely recommend physically reading the book. The book jumps between character points of view with little warning and it was hard to keep track of the large cast initially - although the cast shrank very quickly. The stakes of this book were constantly raised and it was tense til the end.

My main complaint with the book was the ending and just how abrupt it was. It was an explosive way to finish the book and you are left with fewer answers than I was expecting for a book of this kind. Overall, an enjoyable read that has some surprisingly good commentary of the value of people over wealth and some queerness that just existed.

A really good thriller novel that contains just enough to be considered horror without being overly gory. It reads really fast and kept me entertained the whole time. A good read for Halloween

Holy cow! What a ride this was. A perfect fast paced summer horror book! If you watched & liked “Fear street” on netflix, i highly recommend this book!

i really liked the way this was written, cycling through all the characters and information about them. i think it was a clever way to represent the idea of being trapped in a cycle due to things outside of your control. i loved how distinct every character’s voice was, especially brandon’s. but i thought 14 characters was too many and i couldn’t keep them all straight, especially when they started dying. i wish we had gotten a little more of mack’s backstory—
what happened to her in the years between her family’s murder and becoming homeless in her early 20s?
i’m also not sure how i feel about the ending.
i like that it isn’t a traditional happy ending, and White’s message was clearly that the next generation isn’t responsible for fixing the messes their elders made, but i have a hard time being in mack’s side. releasing a demon into the world with no knowledge of what it might do seems……. bad….. to say the least.
and tbh i felt like the romance was unnecessary. i just don’t see why every book needs to have a random romantic subplot 🤷🏼‍♀️ and it wasn’t as spooky/scary as i expected it to be.

This book had a ton of promise, but it didn't quite get there. A Hunger Games vibe, but with people in their 20s (who often read like most YA characters unfortunately). I think it was too rushed in certain places, and it had a lot of characters to get to know at first. I also prefer books with endings that are more wrapped up. Still, with some work this could have been really good, and I think it'd make a good one season show.
