a haunting story that is sadly too real.

I received a copy of this via NetGalley in exchange for my honest opinion.

This is an honest and brutal portrayal of how refugees are often treated, and forgotten about, after they enter detention centres. Seen through the eyes of Subhi, a young boy who was born in the detention centre and has never known any other life.

The story is heartbreaking at times, but a very important one. There is also a magical fantasy element which ensures it isn't too dark for kids/teens.

I would highly recommend this to everyone, from kids aged 12+ to adults.

as I’ve said earlier, reading books connected to school automatically makes them slightly less interesting 😅

However, this book does a marvellous job with showing us the reality of some people’s life. Shubi is the main character, and we read about his life at a refugee Center. This book is about fear, uncertainty, bravery and hope 🙏🏻✨

The Bone Sparrow is an incredibly emotional, heart-wrenching, and powerful book that highlights resilience, especially during tough times. It is beautifully written and deeply moving. I'd recommend it to anyone looking for a book with emotional depth and important literary themes.

This is a book I think everyone needs to read, although it only paints a small corner of a picture of what is happening in our world.
Told by Subhi, a ten year old refugee born in a detention centre, I got to know his family and his friends and it didn't take long to realise that Subhi was a gentle, kind boy who didn't know much about what was outside the fences.
Also told by Jimmie, who lives outside the fences but one day decides to go inside, she befriends Subhi and they become fast friends. Jimmie brings a flask of hot chocolate and and a book, and Subhi reads to her.
A sad but real story of the difference that friendship can make to someone, beautifully written, and I finished it with an ache in my heart.

'And I wish I didn't understand, because understanding doesn't fix it. Understanding just makes it worse.' pg.126

'Coming here is a bit like waking up from a nightmare and then finding out that you aren't awake at all,' Queeny told me one time when we saw a boy try to hurt himself. I tried to tell the boy about the Pebbles of Happy, but he didn't talk English like I do. I gave him the pebble anyway, but it just made him cry big, huge tears that fell without any sound at all.' pg. 137
